Many, many students have a lot of trouble getting organized in school, concentrating on what they read, and learning the skills that ensure good grades. Some seem to go through the never-ending process of trying to figure out ‘how’ to do it. Some students just give up.
Success is impossible if someone has no idea how to achieve it. There are tactical skills, however, that can be learned by the student to help her/him stay focused, be organized, and stay in control of her/his academic responsibilities.
When skills improve, grades improve, and learning is no longer an arduous task; it becomes a welcomed way to spend one’s time. Reading is no longer a chore; it becomes a pleasant pastime.
Learning critical reading skills is essential if a student is going to be successful.
This course is taught on an individual basis only at 20 Euros per hour in my classroom*.

Reading for the main idea, identifying topic sentences, major and supporting points, recognizing cause and effect, chronological order, and emphasizing critical reading techniques are just some of advanced reading skills for older students.
Note taking is a mastered skill used by every successful student. Often students miss the point, have no idea what is being emphasized, and end up doodling instead of taking notes.
Note taking skills and organization of notebooks can easily be attained once a student has a clear understanding of the use and the purpose of both. Each student will create and organize his/her own notebook according to his/her own specific needs.
Both grammar and spelling are taught in the ‘old-fashioned way’ through board work, worksheets, and the memorization of rules, and by writing activities using the Writing Road to Reading. (Either American or British grammar will be taught depending on the student.) |
